In the UK, Black History Month is celebrated every October.
People from African and Caribbean backgrounds have been a fundamental part of British history for centuries and BHM gives everyone an opportunity to share, celebrate and understand the impact of black heritage and culture.
The first Black History Month in the UK took place in 1987, the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the Caribbean. It was arranged by Akyaaba Addai-Sebo (who came to the UK from Ghana as a refugee in 1984), who wanted to challenge racism and celebrate the history of black people.
We're looking forward to celebrating Black History Month in October 2024, with activities and events already being planned within services.
